The Sequence Labs
Comment to DM

What you asked for

Comments into DMs

The full setup. Someone comments your keyword, the link goes out on its own, and you stop typing the same message two hundred times.

This takes about twenty minutes and the free plan covers it. The last step is the one almost nobody does, and it is the only reason any of this is worth setting up.

What you need

  • A Business or Creator account personal accounts cannot do this at all
  • A Facebook Page linked to it Instagram requires it, even if you never use the Page
  • A Manychat account free plan, official Meta partner, no card needed
  • About twenty minutes once per post on the free plan
STEP 01

Switch Instagram to professional

If your account is personal, none of this exists. There is no setting to turn on and no tool that works around it.

  1. Instagram, Settings, then Account type and tools.
  2. Choose Switch to professional account. Creator or Business both work.
  3. When it offers to link a Facebook Page, link one. Make a blank Page if you do not have one.
The Page is not optional. Instagram routes automation permissions through it. You never have to post on it, but the connection has to exist or Manychat will fail at the login step and the error will not tell you why.
STEP 02

Connect Manychat

Manychat is an approved Meta partner, so this is not a workaround that gets your account flagged.

  1. Sign up at manychat.com and pick Instagram as the channel.
  2. It opens a Facebook login. Approve every permission it asks for.
  3. Select the Instagram account you just switched over.

If the connection fails, it is almost always one of two things. The account is still personal, or it is not linked to a Page. Fix that and try again.

STEP 03

Build the automation

One automation watches one post and waits for one word.

  1. Automation, then New Automation.
  2. Pick the Post or Reel comment trigger. Not Story reply, not Direct message.
  3. Choose the post it watches. The post has to already be live, so publish first and come back.
  4. Set your keyword.

Set the keyword to match loosely

This is the setting that quietly loses you half your leads. On exact match, someone typing "once please" or "ONCE!!" gets nothing. Choose contains or broad match instead.

Pick a word nobody types by accident. One word, easy to spell, and not something that shows up in normal conversation under your posts.

One automation per post on the free plan. The any post and next post triggers are paid. So every time you post something with a keyword, you come back and build a fresh one. It takes two minutes once you have done it once.
STEP 04

Write the two messages

Manychat sends an opening message with a button, and then a second message once they tap it. That two step shape is deliberate. The tap is what properly opens the conversation with Instagram.

The opening DM

Short. It exists to get the tap, nothing else. No link in this one.

Opening DM
Hey, thanks for commenting. Tap below and I'll send it over.

Button: Send it

The DM with the link

This one delivers, and it asks a question. The question is the important half.

Second DM
Here you go.

Quick question, when people comment on your posts asking for a link, are you sending those DMs yourself or is it set up to go automatically?

Link button: Open the guide

Ask a question they can answer in three words. Their reply opens a fresh window with Instagram, and it tells you which of them is worth talking to before you have said anything at all.

Put the link on the button, not in the text. Two links in one message reads as spam, and a tapped button is the cleaner mechanic. Label the button with what is on the other side. Click here gets ignored.

Reply in the comments too

Turn on the public comment reply. Something as plain as "sent it, check your DMs" is enough. It keeps the comment section visibly active, and that is a signal the algorithm reads.

STEP 05

Point the link somewhere that captures

Everything above is the part people do. This is the part they skip, and skipping it is what makes the whole setup worthless.

You now have an automation that sends a link to hundreds of people. Ask yourself what you are actually left holding when it fires.

If the link goes to a Linktree, a Google Doc, or a PDF in Drive, the answer is nothing. You have a list of Instagram handles sitting inside somebody else's tool. No email, no phone number, and nothing you can send to all of them at once.

The bot only ever sends the first message.

Instagram closes the automated window twenty four hours after somebody comments. After that, anything you want to say to those people is you, manually, one thread at a time. Which is the exact job the automation was supposed to remove.

And you are messaging people who mostly do not follow you, so a share of those land in message requests and never get opened.

What to do instead

Point the link at a page you own that asks for a name and an email before it hands the thing over. Now you have a contact you can reach anywhere, on any day, with no window closing on you.

The free plan will not do this for you. Manychat has a step called "a DM asking for their email" and it is behind the paywall. The free tier gives you the delivery and charges you for the capture. A simple page of your own does the same job and you keep the list.
STEP 06

Test it before the post goes anywhere

Every time. Not just the first time.

  1. Set the automation live.
  2. From a second account, comment the keyword exactly as you wrote it.
  3. Then comment a messy version from another account. Try "once please" or the word with an exclamation mark. That is how you find out whether your match setting is actually loose.
  4. Tap the button in the DM you receive and confirm the link opens the right page.
  5. Check the contact appeared in Manychat.

If a video lands and the automation is broken, hundreds of people ask you for something and get silence. That is a worse outcome than never running the keyword at all, and it is entirely avoidable with one test comment.

STEP 07

Know what runs out

The free plan has a ceiling and it is not where most people assume.

Manychat counts contacts, meaning unique people who have triggered your automation. Once someone is a contact they stay one forever, so the same person commenting on ten future posts still counts as one.

The cap is across your whole account, not per post. Hit it and new people stop receiving anything.

Check yours under Settings, then Billing, and check it before you post something with a keyword rather than after. If a video does numbers, this is the thing that breaks first.

STEP 08

Where people go wrong

Exact keyword matching

Half the people who want your thing type it slightly wrong. On exact match every one of them gets nothing, and you never find out it happened.

The link goes to a Linktree

You automated the typing and kept the actual problem. Hundreds of people took your link and you cannot reach one of them again without going back into the DMs by hand.

Automating the whole conversation

Deliver the thing, ask one question, then reply as yourself. People can tell when they are still talking to a robot on the fourth message, and that is the message that decides whether they trust you.

Never testing after the first setup

Instagram changes permissions, tokens expire, connections drop. One test comment before each post costs you thirty seconds.

Or I build the whole thing for you

A site and a capture system that turns the audience you already have into booked clients. The automation above is one piece of it. The first step is free, I build a demo on your brand, you look at it and decide from there.
